Obituary of Jean Theresa Pegg

Jean Theresa Pegg (nee Thebarge), February 6, 1936 – January 11, 2025

Jean Pegg died peacefully, with family by her side and supported with heartfelt prayers, on the morning of January 11, 2025, after suffering a stroke the week prior.  She will be dearly missed by her children Allison Adam (Steve), Dale (Jodi), Lesley Walker, Deanna Harris (Joren) and 14 dear grandchildren.  She is survived by in laws Evelyn Fry, Beth and Laurens deKleine and Connie and Kent Smith.

Predeceased by her loving husband, Tommy, her parents Tessie and Bob, sister Margaret Yurack, brother Charles Thebarge, son in law Richard Walker, and by several brothers and sisters in law, cousins and friends.

Jean grew up near the Ottawa West Station (Bayview) where her father was Chief Clerk for CP Rail.  She often reminisced about an idyllic childhood, with Spruce Street, Nanny Goat Hill and Immaculata High School among her early landmarks.  Nurtured by the Christian values and thrift of her Bowes and Thebarge families, Jean did her best to pass those values on to her children and grandkids.

Jean’s nursing career at the Civic Hospital (Class of ’58), where lifelong friendships were formed, led to stints in Bermuda and Vancouver but soon gave way to the demands of motherhood.  She managed the family with a devout and loving touch, with a premium on not wasting food, getting outside to play and having folks over to enjoy the pool or share a meal, often including those who would otherwise be alone.  In later life she worked as a secretary (Holy Rosary Parish), established a book store with her sister (at St. Mary’s Church) and volunteered at the Shepherds of Good Hope.  In retirement, Jean enjoyed bargain hunting (in Bradenton FL in winter), tackling puzzles, quilting, knitting, bingo and praying for God’s blessings on her family and friends.

Sincere thanks the staff at Barrhaven Manor for their amazing care and, most recently, at Saint Vincent Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Shepherds of Good Hope would be appreciated.  Funeral Service to take place in the spring.
