I first met Dr. Frank Tierney over 55 years ago. My brother Richard and I were friends with Stephen, Frank, Dana and David as well as Susan, Cathy and Kerry. To differentiate Frank Sr. from Frank Jr., he became for us "Big Frank" or "Dr. Frank." He was fond of talking about how our group of friends helped dig the Tierney pool in the backyard on Mohawk in the early 70s. As we got to know Frank, it became clear to us that he was one of a kind - an exceptional person in every respect. He served as a role model for many of us. His life experience drove home the importance of education and we were enthralled with the stories of Frank's hockey prowess as a young man. Dr. Frank was like a second dad to many of us. One of my fondest memories of Frank was canvassing with him door to door during my political days. He was a great campaigner and would have been a splendid elected representative. He was civic minded, empathetic with a genuine interest in people. I last saw Frank in October. He was in a wheelchair on Nanaimo Drive out for some fresh air with David. He had a broad smile and still had his firm handshake. I feel very privileged to have known him. Rest in Peace, Frank.

I'm sorry to learn of Frank's passing recently. He and your mother raised quite the clan as I have had the pleasure of meeting most of the siblings and I'm sure he had his hands full! He lived a long life so I’m sure you have a lifetime of memories as you’ve mentioned in his obituary. I did not know your father very well but was fortunate enough to have played outdoor hockey with him a few times at the Woodroffe Park outdoor rink! I remember him being a tenacious hockey player both on offence and defense!! I couldn’t get around him!! This would have been in 1992 or 93. I’m sorry for your loss.

Frank Tierney loved imaginative leaps -- and he was man of great and generous heart. One day I was musing about the many artists, including my mother and his friend Betty Page, who had made works inspired by my poems. ``What about a book that paired the two media?``, he asked, to my dumbfounded delight. No quibbles, no questions. He was there at every step, including negotiating with a difficult artist, and assuring perfect printing, launch and distribution.
My book, Lizard Love, never made either of us any money, but I treasure the book – and above all treasure Frank's friendship and support and the heart of a poet that led him to take on such a risky project. He was special.

As a young poet, one day an Ontario arts grant arrived in the mail. I had no idea where it came from. But I was happy to receive it and took it as a sign that my poems had some merit. One evening several months later, the telephone rang. “Frank Tierney, here.” His deep, mellifluous voice continued, inquiring when my manuscript would be ready. “Ready?” “Yes, that is why we recommended you for a grant.” And so began my poetry collections being brought to light over the past 40 years. Being the early 70s and in the afterglow of Canada`s centennial celebrations, Canadian publishers were springing up eager to bring Canadian poetry to national attention. Frank Tierney was one of these publishers. A tall, dark-haired Ottawa Valley Irish man, always impeccably dressed, he had a voice that inspired confidence and caring for a poet starting out on his journey. I have thought of him often over the years and the impact he had on me in those early days. Please accept my deepest condolences, Thanks Frank.
