Ann Swift

Obituary of Ann Swift

Ann Mary Theresa Swift, daughter of Mary and Harry McGreevy; sister to Thomas (Stella); loving wife and partner of 51 years to the late Michael Swift; mother to the late Peter (Georgina), late David (Chrissanthi) and Andrew (Jamie); grandmother to Michael (Jaimie), Thomas (Sarah), Alexandra, Adam, Alyssa and Olivia; great-grandmother to Matteo; and a great friend to so very many, passed away on August 11.

Ann grew up in Ottawa before moving to Kingston to study nursing at Hôtel Dieu Hospital and becoming a Registered Nurse. She was very proud of her training, making lifelong friends and would participate in her class reunions at every opportunity. Early in her career she worked in hospital settings before moving to a clinical practice as an ophthalmic assistant until her retirement in 1997.

Even with a busy professional career, Ann was also a proud homemaker, making delicious meals while hosting her extended family for holiday gatherings and Sunday dinners; almost always while wearing an outfit she sewed herself. And served in a dining room where she had also made the tablecloth, placemats and curtains!

Ann and Mike enjoyed curling together, belonging to different clubs in Fredericton and Ottawa over the years. They made many friends through curling, spending vacations travelling in groups to bonspiels as spectators and sometimes participants.

While they lived most of their married life in Ottawa, Ann and Mike always kept a special place in their heart for the Maritimes, eventually building a cottage in Amherst, Nova Scotia. They would regularly host family and friends, always with an open door, delicious meal, great conversation, and, most often, a bottle of wine.

Our hope is that she and Mike are now together again, sharing a bottle of wine, and toasting to a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her honour can be made to The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
