Obituary of James "Jim" Andrew Millar
Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at the age of 74. Born in Elk Point, Alberta, Jim grew up in Vernon, Ontario.
Jim is predeceased by his parents, James and Elizabeth (Betty) Millar. He will be lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Melanie (Stephen Chapman) and Allison (Daniel Lavoie) and their mother, Elaine, as well as Jim's four grandsons, William and Sam Chapman and Benjamin and Simon Lavoie. As the second oldest of his siblings, Jim will be lovingly remembered by his brothers, John (Marlene), Randy and Bradley and his sister, Myra McKeen, as well as cousins Doug (Gloria and children, Harris and Kyle), Kathryn (and her son, Jamie) and Bruce, as well as Jim's niece, Vickie Allison and her sons Justin and Chase, Jim's nephew, Scott (predeceased) and Sharon Toop-Millar and their son, Wyatt Millar.
Jim had an incredible professional career impacting the lives of so many people in the Ottawa area and across the country. After completing his honours degree at Carleton University, Jim worked at Metropolitan Life. It was there that he identified the crucial need for a new type of business, that provided comprehensive planning for business owners and families and established his estate & succession planning practice in 1977. A voracious reader and believer in life-long learning, Jim obtained his CLU, CH.F.C. and TEP designations while building his business. As President of The Millar Corporation, Jim helped his clients navigate the complexities of the tax, legal, investment and insurance worlds. His great passion was helping clients preserve and protect the wealth they had created for themselves and future generations. The result of his life's work will have a lasting impact on the businesses and families he helped for many years.
Jim was actively involved in many professional associations and charitable foundations where contributions would directly impact his community. He was especially proud of his involvement with the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, helping to raise thousands of dollars for cancer care and research in the Ottawa area.
Jim enjoyed golf, hockey, football, cars and remodeling his beautiful home and as well as spending time with his cherished family and dear friends.
