Peter Gilman

Obituary of Peter Gilman

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Royston Gilman, January 14, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. Peter was 88 years old and is survived by his wife Isabel Gilman (née Forbes); his children Stephanie Gilman, Christine Gilman, and Stephen Gilman; his grandchildren Alistair Beverley, Parker and Bailey Therrien; and his brother Brian Gilman. He is predeceased by his father Percy Royston Gilman, his mother Margaret Helen Gilman (née Ketchum), his aunt Isabel Percival (née Ketchum), and his granddaughter Jesse Beverley.

A graduate of Queen’s University’s very first Bachelor of Commerce program, Peter had a long and prosperous career as an executive at Ketchum Manufacturing in Ottawa. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow for his long and active philanthropic work with the Rotary Club of West Ottawa.

Peter was a man of few words.  Those who knew him well speak of his kindness, generosity and loyalty to his family, the Rotary Club of West Ottawa, and Manotick United Church.  He is also remembered for his passions.  He enjoyed outdoor pursuits including downhill and cross-country skiing, canoeing and boating, swimming and SCUBA diving, and gardening.  He also enjoyed Canadian political biographies, the morning newspaper, the evening news with a glass of Canadian Club, and jazz pianists - his favourite being the eminent Canadian Oscar Peterson.  He instilled the importance of these pursuits and values foremost by being present with his immediate and extended family.  He will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.

Family will receive friends at Pinecrest Visitation Centre (2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa) on Saturday, January 20 from 11am to 1pm. Service and interment to follow at 1pm. Family and friends are invited to a reception immediately following the service. To view the service virtually, please click HERE
