Sairam. Jai Shree Krishna. Our deepest condolences to Narendra, Roma, Dhruv, the Balkrishna and Majumdar families.
Kalpana and I welcomed Leena on the day she arrived in Ottawa in 1977, after her marriage. That day, we shared the first of our hundreds of subsequent meals together. As our own friendship with Leena and Narendra grew, and along with the widening of our mutual friend circle, we became a tight knit extended Ottawa family.
Brave, calm, contented, courageous, kind, inspirational, positive, talented and welcoming represent some of the words many of us use to describe Leena’s persona.
Sathya Sai Baba preached “Help ever, hurt never”. Leena practiced this in her life. She put her beautiful voice, and her inherent natural talent to sing, to good use for the benefit of our Gujarati community in Ottawa by volunteering as one of the lead female vocalists with the Ujala Group; a group of our musically inclined friends that provided free performances for bhajans, Navratri raas-garba, Diwali celebrations hosted by the community, for a period of over a decade. To help educating medical students about FSHD, Leena volunteered to participate in various initiatives at the local hospitals. She even planned to be helpful in death, by donating her body to the Ottawa Hospital/ Medical Faculty, for the advancement of science. Leena was a soft spoken person, mindful of her words so as not to hurt anyone’s feelings.
During some of my (Girish’s) many visits to see Leena and Narendra, the three of us would have deep discussions about life in general. There was never a sign of judgement or prejudice in Leena’s conversations. She never complained about her health challenges and always said that she was happy. I admired Leena’s openness in sharing her thoughts. These chats with Leena are the memories that I will cherish the most.
Any story about Leena would be incomplete, without also talking about Narendra and Roma. Narendra, you lovingly took excellent care of Leena, in a dedicated, calm and caring manner. You did everything that was possible to assure that Leena was safe, happy and comfortable. Leena deeply cared for your well being too. You two were a perfect match as soul mates. Between Leena and Narendra, you have raised a caring, compassionate, fun-loving, adventurous daughter Roma who has inherited many of your characteristics. Roma always rushed back home to help out at the time of need. Narendra, Roma and Dhruv, you should take solace in knowing that Leena was so happy with your love and support for her.
We feel fortunate to have had Leena in our lives, for a good stretch of own journeys on this earth. We have a lot to put into practice, learning from Leena’s positive approach to life. We pray for Leena’s soul to rest in peace, in God’s abode in Heaven.
Sairam, Jai Shree Krishna.

I am fortunate to have met Leenkaki on 4 occasions and each time she shared her joy freely. I remember the Rockies trip and she displayed her zest for life without limitation.I felt a meaningful connection with her on this occasion.
I remember the emotional song she sang at Roma's wedding..mehalon ka raja mila, hamari beti raj karegi..such a beautiful voice.
Leenkaki I am sure you will continue to spread the love and joy wherever you are and looking down on your loved ones with pride.
Narendrakaka, Roma and Druv may the memories so deeply etched in your hearts comfort you in the days to come
Aum Shanti

Leenaki displayed such positivity with her philosophy of ‘glass always being full’ & such magnetic personality bubbling with Bollywood classic melodies , a life well lived indeed. We first met Leenakaki quite accidentally in Petlad when she was visiting India from Canada with Narendrakaka & us from the Uk. Came to really know her more when we jointly visited the Rockies together on family trip, found her remarkably chirpy, fun loving easy going person.
On many occasions when I have meet Roma, she completely comes across as ‘Leenakaki mark 2’ and that to me shows how well Leenakaki has enriched our lives over & over! No doubt Narendrakaka you have played a big part in this.
Taking Leenaki’s way of gratefully accepting things , hope Narendrakaka, Roma & Dhruv also enjoy your lives to the fullest.
Aum sai ram
Lots of Love

It is difficult to believe Leena Mami is not between us. She was such a colorful character who always lit up the room with her contagious laughter. She will be missed dearly, but her legacy and the memories she created will live on forever. But I know that she left behind beautiful memories, like a sweet rain She’ll always be with you, watching from above Sending love and comfort, wrapped tightly with her angel’s love. May you find comfort in the love she had for you, and the memories you hold close. We are joining in your distress with prayers to you and your family.

Leenaji was a cheerful and pleasant personality - social and deeply religious. Despite her health issues, she was strong enough to easily overcome them and remained calm. This, she maintained till end and left this world peacefully. May her soul rest in eternal peace. Om Shanti.

For as long as I can remember, my mom would always not answer my phone call because she’d be on the phone with her bestie, Leena. Their friendship is one for the books, no matter the distance between them. Leena Aunty has shown us what true friendship is. As a child, she would invite my mom over for Diwali celebrations and visit the Hansia household for Eid festivities. She had a smile that would light up the room and you couldn’t help but fall in love with her charisma. Leena Aunty, you are cherished by so many and leave behind a gem of a human, Roma. May you rest in peace ❤️

Leena Auntie and my mom Indu Shah spent many hours together on the phone over the past few years and before that many happy times in Ottawa together at parties and events, before my mom moved to Toronto to help me and my husband Steve with our young daughters. I hope that Leena and my mom are together somewhere right now laughing and telling stories together. Much love from the Shah Hodgins family in Etobicoke. Our deepest condolences.
