Obituary of Ashok Koul

Ashok Koul, a remarkable man who touched the lives of many, passed away on October 15, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. He left an indelible mark on many throughout his life journey.

Ashok grew up in Srinagar, the youngest of three brothers. Throughout his life, Ashok pursued his dreams relentlessly. He earned a degree in engineering from Banaras Hindu University, and later obtained a PhD in Metallurgy from Sheffield University in England.

In 1980, Ashok immigrated to Canada, where he embarked on a successful research career at the National Research Council of Canada, a journey that spanned 20 years. His groundbreaking research resulted in the development of a new, innovative approach to extending the life of gas turbines. His research and innovations received many accolades, and also led him to establish his company, Life Prediction Technologies, which soon gained broad recognition within the industry. Ashok was not only a brilliant scientist and entrepreneur, but also a dedicated educator. He served as a professor at the University of Ottawa, where he inspired many students with his passion for innovation and knowledge.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Ashok was deeply passionate about his heritage and the cause of Kashmiri Pandits. He tirelessly advocated for their rights, particularly as a founding member of the Indo-Canada Kashmir Forum (ICKF), and strived to keep the rich cultural history of Kashmir alive. He was also a spiritual man, devoted to Hindu philosophy, particularly as a student of Kashmiri Shaivism, and as a prominent figure in the Chinmaya Mission of Ottawa.

Ashok is survived by his loving family, including his spouse Anju, his two sons Abhinav and Kalhan, daughter in-law Bahar, and his grandchildren Kailash, Aanika, and Kavish.

Ashok's bold and kind-hearted personality, as well as his unwavering commitment to his beliefs and community will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. He was a pioneer in his field, a dedicated family man, and a source of inspiration for many. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us.

As we bid farewell to Ashok, we remember his passion for life and his remarkable contributions, and we honor the impact he had on our hearts. He may have left this world, but his spirit lives on in the memories and the lives he touched.
