Violet (Vi) passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus on Friday, August 18, 2023, with her family by her side. Vi is survived by her older sister Eileen Hannah of Linden, Alberta, her children Annette, Sherry (David), Lyle (Rosie) and Burl (Wendy), grandchildren Amanda (Geoffrey), Caitlin (Justin), Devin, Emma (Justin), Chris, Ava, Amy, Oliver and Adrian, and great grandchildren Charles and Winston. She will be remembered fondly by her nieces and nephews Kurt (Tracy), Ken (Cathy), Ruth (Sandor), Beccie (Allan), Brenda (Dan), Brian (Evie), Miles (Viv), Wendell (Debbie), Dave (Rose) and Doug (Brenda). Vi is predeceased by her beloved husband John Walker and her brothers Allan, Harvey and Robert Leinweber.
Vi was born in Acme, Alberta, to John and Annie Leinweber in 1936 and was the youngest of five children. She was raised on their farm near Linden, Alberta, northeast of Calgary. After graduating from Acme High School, Vi followed in her sister’s footsteps attending the University of Alberta, singing in the University’s Mixed Chorus, and working as a teacher.
Vi met John in 1958 in Strathmore, Alberta, where Vi was teaching. They were married in Acme, Alberta, in 1960 and enjoyed 60 years of marriage. After marrying, they lived in Saskatoon, Ottawa and Edmonton before settling in Ottawa in 1970. In addition to raising four children, Vi worked as a supply teacher, later re-trained in Information Technology at Algonquin College, and then worked at Prior Data Sciences and Health Canada.
Vi was a very kind, caring and generous person. She loved music and was an active member in the Nepean Choir and the Kanata Choral Society. Additionally, she enjoyed playing piano and attending the NAC Orchestra’s classical concert series. Vi loved gardening, travelling, reading, watching musicals, square dancing, going on family ski trips, and spending time with family and friends at their home. She was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed. Her family is grateful to the staff at the Stirling Park and Colonel By Retirement Residences for their care during the last two years.
