Obituary of Hannah Gilmour

Hannah Adeline Gilmour (Stanley) left this world peacefully on December 2nd at the age of 85.

Hannah was the dear wife of late Mel Gilmour and loving mother to Kim and to Kathy McCarron (Jeff) and sister to Lillian Mohr (Sid). She is predeceased by her brother Henry Stanley (Isabel), twin brother Herbert Stanley (Emily), and sister Ellen Chesney, as well as her grand-daughters Sarah and Jackie. Hannah is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Growing up in Lanark County, Hannah was a proud valley girl who learned to be thrifty and crafty while growing up on farms in Cedar Hill and Carleton Place.  She was always pickling, preserving and baking to keep the root cellar and freezer full. Some looked forward to family gatherings for her devil eggs, others for her ginger snaps and peanut butter cookies. This sweet, little woman had a fierce competitive edge (as most Stanley’s do), and would not let us forget her great golfing accomplishment of a hole in one, nor would she easily be defeated in a card game.

Hannah was afflicted by Alzheimer’s too early in her life. She spent her last 8 years at Peter D Clark long term care in Ottawa. There the staff treated her as family, giving her tender and attentive care. This disease has little mercy to keep ones dignity but research and awareness is key to improve Alzheimer patients lives. Donations to Alzheimer Society of Canada are welcomed.
