Kathryn was one of my closest childhood friends from elementary through to high school. I have so many fond memories of time spent with her from playing our version of “Gunsmoke” where she and I were the adventurous outlaws and my younger sister was given the role of pursuing us as Marshall Matt Dillon, to devouring soda crackers before ballet lessons next door to Kathryn’s family home. She was always full of fun and had a fantastic imagination. As life goes, I only saw Kathryn a handful of times once I left the Ottawa area to pursue post secondary studies.
We eventually reconnected briefly in 2016 over social media and then a couple of years later Kathryn expressed an interest in my art work which I was posting there. Ultimately, we had several “conversations” online and a few over the phone to discuss a special piece I was to create for her grandchild.
It was a real delight catching up with Kathryn. She was obviously very dedicated to and proud of both her family and the work she did at the Royal. In a similar vein, she found meaning in supporting the creative efforts of those she knew personally. She was a genuine and generous individual with a very big heart. It would have been lovely to meet her again in person. To her family and friends: my very deepest condolences.

It’s hard to put into words what Kathryn means to me, but I will try. We met almost 19 years ago as I joined Kathryn and Garry Armstrong to open Royal Ottawa Place. Kathryn was the best possible colleague in this brand-new role, in an under-construction home; she was competent, calm, constant, confident, caring and of course … very funny! I loved her sense of humour, we 3 had many many laughs together. When things at ROP got a little crazy, Kathryn continued to be her competent, calm, constant, caring self and we leaned on each other … well … ok … I probably leaned on Kathryn more than she leaned on me! When my time at ROP ended abruptly, Kathryn was there, like an embrace, a still point in a turning world. Sounds cheesy, but it’s so true. Ever since then, Kathryn, Garry and I have met a few times a year to catch up on each other’s lives and ROP gossip until the Pandemic disrupted all of that.
Although Kathryn and I were no longer colleagues, our friendship continued to grow and I got to meet her family – she came with her beloved boys to swim in my pool – Kathryn invited me to drive her convertible, I had never been in one and apparently that needed fixing! Oh what fun! We spent time in the amazing garden she and Mark built in their backyard, oh my what peaceful beauty, she shared many plants with me that beautified my garden! When my marriage ended, Kathryn was the first person I called and of course she said, “Get over here now.” When I had to sell my house, Kathryn came to help me scrub a large deck; she made a tough task fun as we laughed and got wet together! Last year I had the privilege of meeting Kathryn’s daughter-in-law and 1 of her beloved grandchildren, and I’m so very grateful Kathryn and I recently shared a meal at Zola’s after she showed me around her favourite Scottish Irish Store next door. I treasure so many more stories of love and laughter but let me end with this one…
We were at Chapters a few years ago and we saw bright orange mugs with the message – ‘Make today ridiculously amazing’ – we thought it would be great to each have one and think of each other when we drank from them. So we each bought one, then proceeded to switch mugs before going home, so that I bought Kathryn’s for her, and she bought mine for me. Really, it made good sense at the time!
Today the mug Kathryn gave me is sitting on a shelf in my living room holding a white rose in water, beside a card Kathryn gave me 18 years ago with the Serenity Prayer – God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference.
Kathryn, I cannot change that you are gone from all of us much too soon, but THANK YOU for making so many of our days ridiculously amazing. I love you I miss you. Baa maa pii* dear friend.

Kathryn was a good high school buddy and has been one of my best friends since 2016. She listened, she had stories, she sang, she drummed and she added fun to every event we ever attended. Condolences to Mark, Adam and Isaak for your sudden loss.

All of us at Royal Ottawa Place will miss Kathryn dearly. I had the pleasure if working with her for the past 18 years. She always had a good story to tell! These photos were taken 2 weeks ago on a golf outing- Kathryn is not a golfer. She definitely gave us more than a few laughs that day!
