Our father, Russell Miller, has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on June 22, 2022. He was 96 years old and was predeceased by our mother, Merilyn Coffin, after 67 years of marriage.
Russell was born on small farm at the end of the road in Sunny Bank, Gaspé, Québec in 1927 to Alfred Miller and Louisa Davis. Russell was the youngest of nine children, outliving Helena, Irma, Elva, May, Sidney, Watson, Kingsley, and Francis.
During WWII, our dad followed his brothers into the armed services, enrolling first in the Air Force, and then in the Army. Although the war was over before he finished his training he was always proud of his service. His last years were spent at Ottawa’s Perley Veterans Centre where they lowered their flags to half-mast to mark his passing.
Having been discharged in Montreal, Russell was working there when he met a beautiful and bold young woman from Farewell Cove. He and Merilyn soon returned to the Gaspé to be married and Dad started work at the mine his father had discovered in Murdochville.
After the mine closed in the 1980s they moved to Ottawa where Dad became a groundskeeper at the Rideau View Golf Club. Both Russell and Merlyn were a vital part of their six grandchildren’s lives, and they were overjoyed at the birth of each of her five great-grandchildren.
Our dad loved the outdoors and his greatest pleasure, late in life, was to walk around the campus of the Perley Centre with his children, which is exactly what he and Andrew were able to do one last time on Father’s Day. He had seen Nancy the day before and had long conversations with her and Rick that morning, only to have a stroke that afternoon. We gathered to say our goodbyes, and he soon passed away quietly.
We will always remember his playful smile and his infectious laugh. He had an enormous generosity of spirit and was always concerned that his family was happy and safe. His memories of growing up on a small farm, with a vast wilderness as his backyard, were a great comfort to him.
Merilyn and Russell were always drawn back to the Gaspé, where their family roots were deep and wide. We hope to bury them there in fall of 2022. A small funeral will be held in Ottawa. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made in Russell’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
So long as we remember him, he’ll always be with us. Russell, and Merilyn, will live on in our hearts.
