It’s a sad feeling to know that Ned is not here anymore, walking on this earth together with us. The world seems like such a different place without him here. It is a lonelier place. Ned was always the rock for so many of us and was always such a strong presence.
I think back to the simpler times when I was a young teenager up at the cottage with both Ned and Mom. I remember what it was like to be Ned’s sailing buddy on the Cat. Some of our sailing adventures were with a few beers on a rope, trailing behind us, and when it got too hot we would drop the sail, grab our cold drinks and jump in for a swim. Other adventures in the hot summer breeze had us hiking out on the wind. Great moments to be alive. Those times where some of the simplest times and we just enjoyed being alive. That is where I will most fondly remember Ned.
Over the last 7 years, the kids and I moved back to Ottawa and we spent so much time together with Ned and Mom. There were many changes to face with Mom and Greg’s health. We faced all of them together. It was not easy, but I am very proud to have been there with and for Ned throughout all of these challenges. Ned was completely committed to his wife Mary and worked hard to meet all of the challenges that came with her deteriorating health. He was truly a rock for her.
I will never forget the time that Ned spent with Graeme and Imahgynne. He was the only person other than mom, on the whole planet that was truly happy and excited to hear of their stories and adventures as they reached for their degrees. Ned really saw their education as something to be proud of, but more importantly, he loved being a part of their success with all of the many stories of their learning and experiences with the professors. I can still hear Ned’s praises with “Good Show” and “Right on man”. It was like he was reliving his own university days with the kids, and all of the joy that comes from stretching the mind and growing one’s place in the world.
I loved listening to Ned talk about literature with Graeme and Imahgynne. They would debate everything, break down an argument to its primary parts and walk away with a deeper understanding. He was absolutely fascinated by how diverse their degree was and enjoyed hearing all about how a work of literature could be interpreted through the historical setting in which it was placed. He enjoyed these conversations and was very taken by the mechanics of poetry and how it all works. He loved hearing about the professors and what they were like and their teaching methods. He also really enjoyed hearing about the kid’s method of study, their organizational skills and how they would plan to keep up with the schoolwork demands. Ned would draw from his own experience of going to university and sympathize with certain academic components that the kids were experiencing, especially so about with what he could remember about his own English classes.
Ned really enjoyed having a proper dinner with everyone, and he would prepare various meal ideas for the far future. He always preplanned the wine and he was always excited to get everybody together at the end of the week and hear about their lives. Ned had a passion for desserts but held a special love for chocolate. Our dinners and our time together were very full. Often times, our dinners would end with him sharing his old books and how they touched his life. He loved sharing his history. He was also very fascinated to learn more about his Hanlan history within the university data base and in the historical climate of the Victorian era of Canada. He couldn’t believe how easy it had become to access academic articles about his family history. He was also excited to share his old English textbooks from the 1950’s and loved going through them with Graeme and Immy. These moments brought back a lot of great memories. Ned would say that these times of talking about literature fondly reminded him of his wife Mary and her love of literature. They would spend hours together talking about books. He really loved that about her. I really wish Ned could have stayed a little longer as I know that he was planning on being there at Graeme and Imahgynne’s graduations, so proud.
Many of our conversations at the kitchen table would be paused with the presents of the resident chipmunk, gathering up the treasures outside the kitchen window. Ned had a routine of sharing from the planned ends of his dinner plate. He thoroughly enjoyed setting something aside for the chipmunk, especially his Ontario corn.
Every spring and fall, Graeme and Ned would get together and lay out plans for the yard. With those plans, they would always be building something, buying new tools and freshening up some part of the property. Whether it was painting the house, laying down a rock bed, installing a patio walkway or taking out stumps, they would always follow up their hard work with a cold beer in which they would proudly sit together and look out over their work. Ned would often call Graeme into the garage or house to hear a song that was playing on CBC, as they both had a love for classical music. He loved hearing Clair de Lune on nylon strings. Ned’s commitment to fixing things and building were a corner stone of who he was throughout his entire life. Like the sleeping cabin he built at the cottage which was practical and made with precision. There was a warmth and security that was discovered by the red cat who took up residence with Ned and Mary. He became affectionately known as Fred the cat. Fred would join Ned and Mary on many adventures, including the 8-month journey down through the states with the two dogs, Foxie and Tweed.
Ned and Mary shared a passion for the arts and spent many occasions attending the opera, ballet and theatre at the NAC, the Ottawa Little Theatre, the Ron Maslin Playhouse, the Royal Alexandra Theatre, and the Stratford festival. It was always interesting to sit with him after dinner and explore his love of music and the stories that went with it.
Ned also enjoyed hearing about Graeme and Immy’s stories at work with the employees and customers. He especially enjoyed stories from the Rideau Club and all the political guests with their personalities and dispositions. Ned enjoyed a good laugh when hearing how Graeme managed the cheeky ones.
I really wish Ned could have stayed a little longer. We will raise a toast to all the stories and treasured moments that were shared with him along our paths. Most of all, I want to say thank you, Ned.
Love,
Marilyn, Graeme and Imahgynne

Liz, Gord, we had the pleasure of meeting your father a number of years ago through a mutual friend,-
What a wealth of life experiences he shared, what an amazing story teller he was, and such a gentleman.
Ned was clearly proud of his two children, so sorry for your loss.
