I just heard from Janice last night and am so glad she thought to reach out to me. Uncle Harry and my Dad were brothers and sorry to say I didn’t see a lot of my cousins over the years as most of them were raised in the Ottawa area, that being their fathers home town; whereas my Father (Leonard) was in the RCAF from 1939 to 1963, so we moved around a lot. But I have a story to tell about Rick; his Dad bought him a set of boxing gloves when he was about 6 or 7 (I would have been 10 or 11) Uncle Harry must have been holding his hands up for Rick to punch and being a kid he got right into throwing those punches and ended up giving his Dad a bloody nose, may have split his lip too, not sure about that, but I was horrified! Makes me laugh and smile now. I am so terribly sorry for the loss of your Husband, Father and Grandfather & Brother; from your memories on video I can see how much he was loved and will be remembered. Losing someone you love is so difficult and only you know how much it hurts, but I like to think that he will be looking down on all of you, because I can also see how much his family & friends meant to him! ❤️Cousin Karen

Dear Janice and family, on behalf of Gayle, myself and the Meagher family , please accept our sincerest sympathies on the passing away of Rick. We were great friends growing up and managed to survive all the mischief that we encountered. We were never forgotten and always looked forward to his Christmas messages. We appreciate now how fortunate we were to get together several years ago at the Carlingwood reunion and a catch up on our experiences on the road of life. Our condolences and thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Kindest regards, Gayle McPhee and Gerry Meagher

My deepest condolences to Janice, Sherri, Eric, and the family on the passing of Rick. He loved each of you fiercely. He was an incredible family man and we were all so lucky to have him in our lives. His generosity, kindness, playfulness & wit knew no bounds & will fondly live on in each of our memories.
He was my a very special uncle and the person who we most looked forward to visiting the family cottage. I have many fond memories of days spent on the beach, around the campfire, in the boat and on the water. Rick could always be counted on to give you a wild ride in his Seadoo boat, & his tube rides were legendary (& thrilling).
Rick had a deep love for cats and I am proud to say he instilled the same love in my mom and me. To this day I share my home with three cats, I have Rick to thank for this. I will never forget him taking his cats outside at the cottage to walk along the beach, a tradition I uphold on summer days to this day.
Love and miss you,
Simone & family

My condolences to Janice and the family.
I wish i had been able to make it to Ottawa for the funeral, but an ill-timed contracting of covid has kept me at home. I wanted to share some of my favourite memories of "Uncle Rick" though.
When me and my brother and sister were young (5-10), he would always come up to the cottage and spend time with us. We looked forward to his visit more than anyone else's, mostly because he would bring a bag of penny candy for us three kids. I remember running to his car when he would pull in the driveway so we could secure our precious bag of candy. One year, when we were still very young, he brought us kids all some of the small handheld fireworks you could light and throw, which we were surely not allowed to have at the time. I was so happy to have them, and i kept those fireworks hidden from my parents in my secret stash box for years, they were a prized possession at the time. We were always so excited to have Uncle Rick up to the cottage to see what fun things he would bring us next.
As kids, we would always go tubing up at the cottage, but the experience was different when Rick was the one driving the boat (the Seadoo boat especially). Most drivers would take it easy on us little kids, but not Rick, whose sole goal was to get us to fall off that tube as fast as possible by any means necessary. You knew you were in for a wild ride if Rick was taking you out for a tube-ride, but it was so much fun.
My mom (Sue Schroeter), always shared stories with us of the trouble Uncle Rick got into during his schooling years, and the stories reached legendary status in our household. I don't remember them all, but i do remember something about him throwing fireworks in someone's sleeping bag.
I am going to miss you very much Uncle Rick, you were a great Uncle, and i have so many good memories of my times with you.

My favorite memories of Uncle Ricky were at the cottage. He was the one adult in the family who would really play with us. Our favorite game was while in the lake he would pretend to be Jaws or a crocodile and would try to catch us. We would scream and laugh, it was so much fun! We would also play Old Maid and tell us whoever ended up the Old Maid would be sleeping in the outhouse. Uncle Ricky somehow was never the Old Maid. I also remember he would do an imitation of grandma, donning her silver shoes and broom. We would laugh hysterically because we all knew grandma would use that broom to sweep the sand off our feet and it hurt. I came out to Ottawa a few years ago and it was wonderful hearing old stories and memories of my grandparents from Uncle Ricky. Uncle Ricky, you will be missed dearly but live on in those wonderful memories of summers at the cottage.

I’ll always cherish being able to bring my wife and daughter to visit Rick and Janice a few years ago while we were visiting Ottawa. We had planned to visit again but the pandemic put any travel plans on hold which is a true shame. I’ll also fondly remember Rick’s sense of humour on Facebook. Our sincerest condolences.
