Obituary of Shawky Botros
We are sad to share the news of the passing of Shawky Botros on February 9, 2022. He departed with his children by his side, as his favourite music played and stories of his life were shared.
Shawky had an infectious energy and touched everyone he met with his warm personality. He had a quiet demeanour, but with just a few words he could make you feel like the most important person in the world.
Shawky was an avid gardener, perfecting his tomatoes and grapes over the years. He was infinitely generous with his vegetable bounty as well, as his family and neighbours never left his home with less than a full bag of produce. He had a passion for all things food, often times experimenting with new bread recipes and pickling anything he could get his hands on. He loved Westerns and horror movies the most, and would find joy in recounting the entire plots to whoever would listen. Music was always playing in his home, and his enthusiasm for tunes from his youthful days was apparent. He found joy in the simple things, and embodied the saying ‘the best things in life are free’, whether it was spending time with family, walking about the city or being outside tending to his garden. Shawky loved to share these passions and his wealth of experience with his three children, who have all carried forward a piece of him, be it through gardening, music, or love of nature.
Above all, Shawky was committed to being a steadfast, loving father and friend to his three children, Mario, Sarah (Khalid), and Silvana, and a doting grandfather to his granddaughter Noah, or as he liked to call her “Booboo”. He will be deeply missed by them.
Shawky will be remembered by his wife Mona, his mother Marie, his siblings Maurice (Raga), Nagy (Iman) and Georgette, his nephews and nieces, Abanoub, Kerolos, George and Mary. He is predeceased by his father, Girgis.
The funeral will take place on Thursday, February 17th at 12pm, at St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church, 1 Canfield Road, Ottawa.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kidney Research Centre can be made online through The Ottawa Hospital Foundation.
