Obituary of Alton Douglas Weedmark
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Mickey Weedmark on Monday November 22, comfortably, at the Queensway Carleton hospital, surrounded by his loving family, and now joining his son Stephen.
Born and raised in Beachburg, Ontario, Mickey was the son of Archibald and Ruby (Moore), and the last member of this family; he joins his siblings and their spouses, Gillen (Bernice), Helen (Alvin Schilkie), H.R. (Gwen) and Darwin (Ezma).
A loving husband, great father and proud grandfather, Mickey had a wonderful 91 ½ years of life.
Affectionately nicknamed Mickey when he was 10 years old, this name stuck with him for the next 80 years. Leaving school at age 15 to join his father lumbering and operating a sawmill, Mickey would grow from this to be an honest, hardworking man. He attended Ryerson University in 1955 to obtain his mechanic’s license and worked in Weedmark’s Garage in Carp with his uncle.
Meeting the love of his life on a blind date, Hazel (Walsh) and Mickey would marry, have 5 children and successfully own and operate Weedmark Service Centre on Carp Road for the next 53 years.
Mickey was greatly respected as a mechanic and as a person by the customers who frequented the garage, and those customers in turn certainly enjoyed the many stories he had to tell.
Mickey loved to tell stories of years gone by, from working in the Swisha, going to Ryerson on Spadina, travelling up the valley to Petawawee, and talking about cars and steam engines, especially the Whippet and ‘55 Chevys. Mickey truly enjoyed many fun vacations and get togethers with family and friends, talking, sharing and laughing, especially at their cottage on Centennial Lake and at the Whispering Pines Hunt Camp.
Mickey will be greatly missed by his wife, Hazel, his children and their spouses, Terrence (Carol Warwick), Beverley (David Alexander), Stephen (deceased 1979), Gregory (Debra Green) and Paul (Andrea Ekstrom). Also deeply missing their grandfather, Jennifer Walker (Blair) and Cassandra Alexander (Travis Dupuis), Blake and Shayla Weedmark, and Tyler and Mackenzie Weedmark; and also their great grandfather, Emma and Ethan Walker.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
Thank you to all the wonderful staff in the Emergency Department and the Acute Care of the Elderly Unit at the Queensway Carleton Hospital for treating Mickey with care, respect and dignity.
Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
