Lesley was a stalwart friend. We knew each other well through public and high school
Her calm demeanour and matter of fact attitude was a much needed balm.
The Hulse family hosted us frequently
It was there that I had my first billiard lesson

I met Lesley in the Laurentian band just after I moved to Ottawa. Feeling a little lost in a different culture, what I first liked about her was her lack of pretension, her consideration for others and that we could laugh at people without being mean. She helped me get a great summer job at the Ottawa Civic Hospital and we shared our observations of people there at lunch time. We saw each other less after we left for university but "a few" years ago, we connected again and walked and cycled while talking about…many things. Lesley was interested and interesting and she could voice her opinions frankly without being angry or aggressive. She cooked wonderful meals for her old school friends, and she and Fred were considerate hosts. My sincere condolences to Fred, to John and to the whole family.

Oh, how I miss my friend Lesley. She was a lovely person who was always game to try new things and encourage others to do the same. Her subtle humour and no nonsense nature were a wonderful combination. I always looked forward to our tennis games, skiing outings, pole walking and strolling in the neighbourhood and green space. Conversation with Lesley was always stimulating and varied…..we were never at a loss for words.
My thoughts are with you, Fred and John.

I met Lesley at the age of 13 years and we became lifelong friends. Even back then, Lesley was an intelligent, inquiring, curious person. She was particularly interested in the people she encountered -- whether in novels or in real life -- and what made them tick. When Lesley described a relative, a teacher or a friend, the person's character, strengths and foibles sprang to life.
I have many memories of Lesley over the years -- pajama parties, band practices, riding our bikes, doing homework together, the annual pilgrimage to see the latest 007 movie -- here's a few.
At her family's cottage in the mid-sixties: A spirited, fun-loving teenager, Lesley rowed the two of us in her boat, The Boodle Bumtrinket, to the middle of Mississippi Lake. As the sun went down, we sang songs with gusto and Lesley decided to yodel -- for the first time. Well, she was no Julie Andrews but definitely adventurous and rather spectacular in the attempt!
Camping in Owen Sound, in the late seventies: We were awakened in the middle of the night by teenagers setting up tents and singing. While I plotted murder, Lesley, perhaps recalling her "yodel on the lake", tactfully but directly posed the question to them: "Do you not think 3 AM is a bit late to start a singalong?" This was my first experience of Lesley's calm, non-confrontational approach, that saw the teens' perspective and encouraged them to see ours. It worked! We slept!
Ottawa, mid '90s: Riding bikes around Ottawa, we stopped at the Hog's Back Falls and I reflected that, as children, we were bored by scenery and wondered why it seemed so enjoyable now. Lesley thought for a minute then replied: " Perhaps we are becoming wise, Elinor."
Oh wise one, I will miss you, Lesley.
My condolences to Fred, John and all others who mourn.

Lesley was a generous, humorous, vivacious hostess. I had the privilege of spending a few nights at their house in Ottawa, and spent a night out at the comedy club when she visited her friend, Elinor, in Toronto.
She was such fun, and will be missed.
Sincere and deep condolences to Fred.
