I had the privilege of meeting Rick and Sue many years ago through my sister and brother in law. We became fast friends and both Rick and Sue welcomed me with open arms. I retired a year and a half ago and started selling stuff on Kijiji . I told Rick about it and he immediately offered items he intended to donate to Value Villiage. The three of us had a great time talking about the many amazing stories of people buying Rick and Sue's items. As anyone who knows them they took very good care of all their property. We split the proceeds 50/50 and Rick was thrilled to have a few dollars to buy some Kahlua for his coffee. I will miss telling stories and laughing with him and Sue...Rick, I will be there if Sue needs anything. Sail on my friend.

So sorry to hear of Rick's sudden passing Sue. I really enjoyed meeting Rick for coffee after we met at the Heart Institute. We sure had some great laughs together! I had been meaning to call for another coffee over the winter, so sad that I didn't.
You are in my prayers.

I was extremely shocked and saddened to hear of Rick’s passing. When I think of Rick, the following words comes to mind: smiling, joker, funny, sense of humor, happy, friendly, great friend, fun, made people feel comfortable, mentor, always there for people, generous, calm, easy going, easy to talk to, such a nice guy, big heart and kind soul.
I was honored and privileged to know and work for Rick at AAFC on the NHCAP project until his retirement, and he was the best boss, and made work so much more fun. I remember the good old days in the SJCB East Wing with social gatherings for every occasion, where Rick was also well known to be the Christmas Santa and give out gifts. I remember our morning break time trips to the Great Canadian Bagel (while working at NHCAP), how he always teased me for not wanting to eat his famous grouse soup (since I’m vegetarian), how he remembered birthdays, always had dog treats in his pockets to give to the neighborhood dogs on his walks, how he loved kids, the confetti in the greeting cards that him and Sue would send out, his love for lemon anything (if I recall correctly), the Sambuca flavored candies he accumulated from “Chances R” on Thursday nights and gave me bags full (I believe he even counted them and told me there were 100 in the bag every time) since he knew how much I liked those, our lunch get togethers after he retired, and our Saturday morning Tim’s get togethers with the gang, and when he saw you he would always say “Hey Man”. I sadly lost touch with Rick after I moved to Halifax in 2015, but I will always cherish the wonderful memories I have of Rick.
Thanks for being who you were Rick, you were one of a kind, you inspired many including me, and this world is a much better place because of you. You left us way too soon and you will be missed by all who had the honor of knowing you.
My deepest sympathies to Sue and his family. May the many wonderful memories of Rick bring you and your family comfort during this very difficult time.

I met Rick when he became my 'unofficial landlord' at the Central Experimental Farm in 1995. Our friendship commenced there and extended over the years until his untimely death. Rick was our unpaid handyman at home and I see evidence of his skills all over our house. Generosity in spades. Rick introduced me to the JCC at a time when I truly needed a friend and I'll never forget our chats and recipe sharing as we rode our bikes, shooting hoops in the gym, shooting the breeze on the bleachers and you guessed it more shooting the breeze in the steam room. Just having viewed Rick's funeral and listening to 'Spirit in the Sky' as the service ended, it reminded me of Rick wearing his headphones as he worked on the machines and belted out 'oldie goldies' including the afore mentioned 'Spirit in the Sky' to the amusement and entertainment of his fellow gym patrons. On behalf of Bev and I, thank you Rick for inviting us into your life and thanks for the memories. Our condolences to Sue. Our thoughts are with you. Mike Nowosad

Ollie and Lucy waiting for Mr. Snausage to stop by on his way for morning coffee! I take comfort in knowing that Rick is now taking care of my little guy. Kathy and I feel privileged to have been included in visits to he cottage, a Rick Rain fish fry, sharing the story of the Rolling Rock beer, helping change the doors, receiving Rick's famous soap on a rope, and many other moments over the past decade. Truly, larger than life; Rick is someone that you hold in high esteem and leaves a big hole in our hearts. I am pleased to see that Sue has taken over as primary snausage giver to my Lucy... Sue, 6:00 really isn't that early?!?!

I will miss Rick more than I can say. My heart goes out to Sue and family.
I worked with Rick for many, many years. He was my boss (best boss ever!) when I had both my kids. To them, he was Uncle Ricky. He had a great perspective on life and I learned a lot from him. Remarkable for his approachability and great sense of humour as well as his devotion to friendship. He reached out and got people together. He was always there for you when you needed anything at all. I cherish all the coffee get togethers we had over the years since his retirement, then my own. All the funny emails and stories of great travel with his beloved Sue. Heartbroken that he was taken so soon.

Sue and family,
I was shocked and very saddened to hear the sad news of Rick’s unexpected passing. I worked with Rick at AAFC from 1997 until his retirement, but was fortunate enough to keep in contact with him over the years. We both shared an enjoyment of the outdoors and he would often reach out to ask about my fall hunting season or to share his spring turkey hunting success. I saw him last month where I was lucky enough to receive some of Rick’s own smoked jerky and it was excellent. He was his usual good humoured self joking around and fun to be around and as always, I left our get-together grinning from ear to ear. Rick was someone who had the ability to make those around him smile with his humour, friendliness and genuine good nature. Reading all of the comments here is a testament to how many lives he touched… he really was a great guy and who will be sorely missed.
Sincerely,
Nick Pyzevas

We had a shared love of cottage life and enjoyed the exchange of fishing stories. Rick was always ready with a funny quip and had a great sense of humour. An all around nice guy. There are not enough Rick Rains in the world.

Sue,
It is with great sadness I pen this having heard of Rick’s passing. Rick was first a coach to me as a 12 year old hockey player. I have fond memories of Rick picking me up on Sunday mornings around 5:30 am for a trek to Kemptville for practice or game at 7:00 am in the middle of winter. Those rides always included donuts for which he found time to purchase before his pick-up. I never heard him swear, and rarely his temper flared. That’s not easy with a bunch of young budding NHL stars! In time the coach/player relationship moved to a solid friendship that included my wife Ann. Running into both of you was always a breath of fresh air for Ann & I when we were out and about in Ottawa. To say he will be missed is understatement.

My most sincere condolences to Rick's wife, Sue, and his entire family. I worked with Rick at Agriculture Canada for many years, and was lucky enough to have stayed in touch with him occasionally in the years since, mostly at the early morning Timmies coffees and in birthday and Coronation street email messages. Rick really was 1 in a million. It was always a pleasure to catch up with him and hear of his latest travels and adventures at home or cottage. Working with him was also a great experience. He was one of the most creative, witty, energetic, imaginative and hilariously fun people I have ever worked with. He made going to work fun and did so effortlessly. He always had time for a quick chat and also always had some scheme or idea to make everyone laugh and/or smile. Christmas parties were especially fun and I will treasure my role as the elf Stinky to his entertaining Santa. He had originally brought me into Ag Can and was always a great mentor to and model for me and for all who worked with or for him. In my career, those years at Ag were the glory days and Rick was a huge part of why that was. It is so shocking that he is gone. RIP Rick, and thank you for all the great memories.
