Obituary of Dimitrios Koutras

Passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute on January 29, 2021 at the age of 88.

Survived by his loving wife Aikaterini of 59 years. He was a devoted and loving father to his daughter Soula (Perry) and son George (Jane). He was a proud grandfather to 6 grandchildren: Constantina (Dallas), Anthony, Alexandra (Jonny), Katherine, Dimitri and Nicholas.

Survived by his brothers Kosta “Gus” (Tasia) and Philimon “Mike” (Katina) and their families. Predeceased by his sisters Pagona, Violeta, Areti all in Greece, and Katina and his brother Yianni “John” both in Canada (Ottawa). Also survived by his many nieces and nephews in Canada and Greece.

Dimitri was born on August 5, 1932 in the village of Polilofos, on the Island of Evia, Greece. He married in Greece and left with his new bride, Aikaterini, to begin their new life in Canada. They arrived in Canada on January 27, 1962 by ship (TS Olympia) via Halifax. They made their way to Montreal where they stayed a few months and then came to Ottawa, making it their permanent home.

Dimitri was instrumental in establishing the International Languages Greek Language School that continues to this day teaching the Greek language and culture to young Greek Canadians. He was an entrepreneur and was involved in various business ventures and he frequently referred to himself as “short fella, white hair”.

Dimitri dedicated his life to his family, providing them with a deep sense of faith, community and strong family values. He treasured his family and embraced every moment with them.

He had many hobbies such as wine making and gardening, however his passion was hunting and fishing with family and close friends. He loved going to the “caliva” (camp) which was his outdoor nature retreat. There, in his last years, he discovered a great interest in making his own maple syrup.

Dimitri leaves behind him a legacy of love, selflessness, tradition, generosity, kindness and good advice. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family and many friends.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute for their excellent care and support, especially in these difficult and strict Covid-19 times.

There will be a private visitation and funeral service, by invitation only. Dimitri will be interred in a Private Graveside Ceremony attended by his immediate family only at Pinecrest Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in his memory. Dimitri would consider this a great tribute to the Church and Community that he loved so dearly and passionately. You may make an online  donation to the church here.
