My deepest sympathy to you on the death of Canon Baird. I was a a child and young man at St Thomas' and was mentored by Canon Baird toward the priesthood. I spoke at his retirement party at St Thomas' and value deeply the care, support and challenge he gave me in my pursuit of Ordination. I valued his instinctive sense of pastoral care and one of my fondest memories is of him, in his cassock, quietly greeting people before or after the service and doing gentle but profound pastoral care. I loved his human approach to liturgy and his insistence that if one did something in the liturgy it should have a well thought out theological reason. I have used that model and thinking myself in my whole ministry. I loved his dry sense of humour and willingness to question within himself the tenants of the faith. Because of his influence I have always been willing to question and challenge, believing that if the faith can not take that challenge, then it can not be much of a living faith. Again I attribute that characteristic of my ministry to Canon Baird's teaching and personal integrity. It was my privilege to have him as one of my early mentors. I have been remembering him and your family in my prayers. The Reverend Canon John Wilker-Blakley

I am so sorry to hear of Leonard's death but give thanks for the richness of his life, his exemplary service as a priest in the Church of God and the gracefulness of his life. When I became the assistant at St. Matthew's Leonard had become a senior priest and an example to of those us just beginning our careers and, I dare say, to his contemporaries - always. He was indeed a gentle and wise presence and always good and entertaining company. Gene and Leonard were very much a part of enriching our lives and their memory is a blessing. May they rest in peace and rise in glory. (Peter Coffin - Retired Anglican Bishop of Ottawa)

Reverend Canon Leonard J. Baird was the dearest soul and was always there to help and encourage his parishioners.
Leonard baptized both our daughter Maureen (Sept.1982) and our son Sean (1985) at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Ottawa. Leonard encouraged friendship and compassion. The Reverend assisted at my fathers(Robert's) funeral service
( Oct. 18th,2005) and offered tremendous support to Gwen and other family members. We still recall the good times, the chicken BB-Q's, the Sunday school classes, the Church Bazaars and the coffee hours. He had such a good sense of humour.
Our Sincerest Condolences.
He will be sorely missed.

On behalf of all the Wilmots, we extend our deepest sympathies to the Baird family. We knew Leonard from his many years at St. Thomas the Apostle church, and appreciated the warmth and caring he extended to each and every one of us. He was patient as I learned to become a server at the church, always remembered my mother, Gwen, when she attended St. Thomas, and was kind enough to visit my Dad, Robert, during his last days in hospital. We appreciate all that Leonard did to support his parishioners and friends and will miss his uplifting presence. Our hearts go out to you at this most challenging time.
Sincerely,
Jean, Gwen, Doug & Christina, Marg & Michael

I only met Leonard once, though I have been hearing about him through my son Ben and daughter-in-law Alexa for a decade. That one meeting was at the wedding of Ben and Alexa, and I was thrilled to spend time with a good open-hearted, curious, good-humoured and kind man. It was extra special that he blessed the union of Ben and Alexa during the celebration of their marriage. He leaves quite legacy and I know he loved and was much loved.
