I had the honor of being Mike's direct report at Demand Spring. As a manager, he was awesome, supportive, and stood back and let me do my thing, unless he could tell I was struggling—like when my out-of-shape self was lagging behind during a team outing to skate the Ottawa River, and he wordlessly looped my arm and helped me skate all the way back. I'm filled with great sorrow to have heard of Mike's passing. As one of Maddye's best friends, I got to know Mike pretty well. Whenever I came over to Maddye's house, Mike would always greet me and make me feel so welcomed. Mike was always so kind and he always wanted to know what was new in my life. Dear Martine, Matt, Madison, Jim, Alice, Shelagh, Steve: I am sad and heartbroken with you about Mike's death. Although we have not seen each other for a very, very long time, I have been remembering many happy childhood memories of spending time with Mike, Mr. and Mrs. McAllister, Shelagh and your family dog Muffin(that's going waaay back!).Mike was always a kind, fun loving guy, he was my favorite babysitter and he was a talented and fearless multi sport athlete as we grew up. I was delighted to learn that Mike and Martine after meeting at U of O and were married and that (@Martine) you have a wonderful family with 2 beautiful children (now adults!) and that you have a lovely small white dog. I wish we kept more in touch over the years but happily through Facebook, we have been able to reconnect. On a sentimental note, I remember visiting North Bay a few years after moving away in the late 80s- early 90s. I was able to visit Mike and Mr. and Mrs. M. on Camelot Dr. I was impressed with Mike's skill and passion for deskop publishing and software and his stealth use of his early Mac computer. It is wonderful that Mike continued in the software - tech and technical writing field as it grew in many forms during his career in Ottawa. I wish that we could have met in person to express my condolences and my gratitude for the McAllister family's kindness and patience for those early years when life at the Heibein household was a bit chaotic and in upheaval mode. Although I may not have recognized it then, but Mike was a big support and a big brother type figure to me. Mike's legacy of kindness, friendship and being an all around great guy will be cherished. On a more wishful note, I hope that some day cancer in all of its awful forms will stop taking so many lives of our loved ones. Mike put up a brave and courageous fight supported by his family and his many friends. I will be making a donation to the Canadian Lung Association in honour of and in remembrance of Mike. Sending you all kind thoughts during this difficult time from Norway.

We wish we had been able to spend more time with you Mike and Martine before we moved. Our work lives kept us busy and then covid and our move. Martina - we often ran into Mike on our morning dog walks - he always had the same route (which was sometimes longer than where we wanted to go :) or at the gym. He was there early and finished his workout as we were just arriving. He spoke fondly of Mathew and school and work and Maddison’s skating. A proud father and husband. So many good memories of working with Mike but he has had a lasting impact for our family through Cosmo. We were visiting Mike and family and Cosmo was being Cosmo- cute, well behaved, and a protector of the family from unknown intruders. Well, Mike would NOT let us take Cosmo home with us, but Cosmo left such an impression that every time I'd turn around, Noel was googling Havanese puppies. Less than 3 weeks after our visit, Noel visited the Gatineau SPCA and we adopted George. Not a Havanese...not Cosmo- but now a valued member of the family. And that's what it was all about with Mike- it was all about family. And fun...and I will miss him more than words can say.
