Obituary of Stewart Wayne McKee

age 84, passed away on Tuesday November 4, 2025, at the Stillwater Creek Retirement Residence in Ottawa. Over the past few years, he battled Parkinson’s and put up a courageous fight, this past year, against oral cancer. Born on February 21, 1941, in Kingston, Wayne was a dedicated High School business teacher who spent his entire life adhering to the motto “If it’s worth doing, then it’s worth doing well.”

A loving husband and father, Wayne is survived by his wife Susan (nee Sampson), sons Brian and David (Mandy Galvao), brother Keith McKee, sister Eileen Murray, and grandchildren Owen McKee and Josh McKee. He was preceded in death by his mother Margaret Christena McKee, father Francis Alexander McKee, Sister-in-Law Millie McKee (Keith) and Brother-in-Law Don Murray (Eileen).

Wayne attended Kingston Collegiate Vocational Institute (KCVI) High School graduating Grade 13 in 1959. He went on to Queens University and graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then decided to go to Montreal in search of work and developed a crush on his Robert Simpson sales trainer, Susan Elisabeth Sampson. They were married on October 26, 1963, in Kingston. Two sons quickly followed, Brian (1964) and David (1965). After a quick stint in Peterborough, Wayne decided Ottawa would be the perfect spot to raise the family – equidistant from both parents in Kingston ON and Hudson Heights PQ. Wayne started teaching business classes – Accounting, Marketing, Typing, Consumer Studies etc. at Merivale High School, moved on to teach a few years at Sir Robert Borden HS and finished his teaching career at AY Jackson HS, retiring in 1997.

Retirement brought many travels, a lifelong interest. The highlights were a trip to Japan in 1993, another trip to Australia and Hawaii in 1989, a number of Viking Cruise Ship adventures in Europe, Azores 2004, Ireland 2014 and a Miami cruise in 2019.

Wayne also loved his sports. An avid curler in the 1960’s & 70’s he could be found at many a local, or provincial, bonspiel. He took time to coach both his son’s hockey teams in the Nepean Minor Hockey Association. He loved tennis and played for many years and also served as the Barrhaven Tennis Club president for a number of years. He enjoyed golf and he and Sue joined Greensmere Golf Club in 2000 before shovels were even put in the ground. He played in and organized many Senior Men’s Nights and Weekend Tournaments. Wayne was also fortunate enough to have the ‘Golf Gods’ smile on him twice, scoring two Holes-in-One, both at Greensmere.

Those who knew Wayne remember him for his tireless work ethic and his easy-going sense of humour. He cherished time spent with family, kids and grandkids and creating memories that his loved ones will hold dear.

The family would like to thank all the caregivers and medical staff at the Ottawa General Hospital, Cancer Centre for their compassion and support. In addition, all the wonderful support people at Ontario Health at Home.
