Obituary of James Douglas Winter
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Douglas Winter, aged 92. Jim departed this life peacefully on August 24, 2025, with family by his side.
Jim lived a full life right up to his last days. He was born and raised in Nova Scotia, the son of Thomas and Francis, and younger brother to Karl. He enjoyed his early years as a mechanic, but ultimately opted for a career as an electrical engineer. He moved to Ottawa, joining a young Bell Northern Research; he played key roles in the company’s success, eventually retiring from Nortel after more than 35 years. Outside of work, Jim enjoyed skiing, gardening, working on finances, and a good hockey game. He continued to enjoy tinkering with cars. In fact, any kind of mechanical challenge was of interest.
In his later years, Jim enjoyed telling stories of his life well-lived. One message always stood out, and he would re-tell it again and again - how very proud he was of his family.
Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife, Maria; his sons, Stewart (Margot) and Tom (Ruth); his grandchildren, Kaitlin (Robert), Jason (Curtis), Brenna (Brent) and Monica (Patrick); and his close extended family, Joana, Andres, Marco and Felipe.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Friday, August 29th at 11:00 am at Highland Park Cemetery, 2037 McGee Side Road, Carp. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Almonte General Hospital.
