Arthur Bob Babych

Obituary of Arthur Bob Babych

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Art Babych, who died on July 13, 2025 at the age of 83.

Beloved husband of Marilyn (Rose), loving father of son Darren, daughter Crystal (Greg Lilbourne), and stepfather of Michael Emond (Hanady Rahme & Gabe). Predeceased by his parents Lena and Nicholas, brother James (Betty) and sister Lillian (Ray Saretsky). Lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews and grandson Connor (Lilbourne).

Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Art was an award-winning reporter and photographer who worked for several years at top radio and television stations in Western Canada including Calgary and Edmonton. In 1992 he became the first religion reporter accredited by the Parliamentary Press Gallery, where he worked for 12 years for Canadian Catholic News, a news-sharing co-operative operated by seven of the largest Roman Catholic newspapers in Canada including the Prairie Messenger, where he was editor for three years. From 2005 to 2015 Art was editor of Crosstalk, the newspaper of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, which won numerous awards from the Canadian Church Press.

Photography wasn’t just his work but also his passion.  Art never travelled without his camera.  Whether it was a trip with Marilyn – like the Grand Canyon or Costa Rica – a visit to a local park or nature reserve or a family birthday party.  Art loved to take pictures and share them with friends and family.  His pictures hang on the walls of many loved ones and continue to bring them joy.
