Obituary of Stamatiki “Matoula” Kontogiannis
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Stamatiki “Matoula” Kontogiannis (née Polimenakos) on June 3, 2025, at the age of 93.
Beloved wife of the late John Kontogiannis, Stamatiki was a devoted mother to George (Agatha) and Bill (Kathy), and a cherished grandmother to John, Georgia, John, Foti, and Dimitri.
Born in Laconia, Greece, Stamatiki was the second of six children of the late Vasilios and Evanthia Polimenakos (née Scalchunes). She immigrated to Canada in 1957 to join her sister in Ottawa, where she later met John. They married in 1959 and shared 52 loving years together until his passing in 2011.
She is survived by her sister Marina (Kostas) and was predeceased by her siblings Polichronia (late John), Dimitri (Daphne), Ekaterini (Christos), and Panagiotis (Lise). Stamatiki will be fondly remembered by extended family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Visitation will take place at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 1315 Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa, on Monday, June 9, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Pinecrest Cemetery, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Ottawa General Hospital and the compassionate team at the May Court Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Stamatiki’s memory may be made to the Hellenic Community of Ottawa.
