Obituary of Robert James Hill
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert “Bud” Hill on May 23, 2025, in his 89th year. Bud was a beloved husband to the late Mary Hill, and father to Bob (Laura), Carol (Warren), and Jeff. He is survived by his grandchildren: Sean, Jennifer, Juliana, and Evan (Lily).
After growing up in Winnipeg, Bud joined the army in 1958, and served in posts across Canada, as well as in the United States, Germany and the Middle East. During his career, Bud was a helicopter pilot, test pilot, flight instructor, United Nations peacekeeper, and military strategist. He retired with the rank of Major in 1991.
As a young officer, Bud met Mary Byrne, a nurse who had immigrated to Canada from Ireland. Bud and Mary wed and, in the years that followed, they took their young family on many memorable adventures around the world.
Bud’s inquisitive mind fueled a lifelong passion for learning, and his many interests included science, literature, history, and music. Bud was also a natural teacher, who passed along his knowledge and many skills to each of his children and grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Dr. Andrea McDonald and the staff at VIVA Barrhaven for their contributions to Bud’s care during his final months.
A celebration of life will take place at 1:00pm on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at Highland Park Cemetery, 2037 McGee Side Road, Carp, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation or the Ottawa Heart Institute.
