Obituary of Mark Shaver

Peacefully and surrounded by his family, Mark James Shaver passed away on March 29th, 2025.

He leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Margot; his children Tom (Andie), Samantha (Kyle), and Troy (Kayla); his brothers and business partners Peter (Karen) and David; nieces and nephews; and many cherished friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Gerald Clifton and Frances Lilyan.

Mark was a born problem-solver with natural business instincts. He began working at the age of thirteen and dedicated nearly 50 years to successfully growing his family business, Shaver Business Products, alongside his brothers and many long-term employees.

In 1983, Mark met the love of his life, Margot Vardigans, when she moved in across the street from him on Matthews Avenue in Ottawa. He told his friend that day that he was going to marry her, and he did so in August 1988. Together, they had three wonderful children and built a life filled with hockey practices and tournaments, where they met many great friends along the way.

Mark loved fast cars, beautiful watches, loud music, and spending time with those he loved. He was always happy to take a new family friend for a quick drive, typically well above the speed limit. Despite his taste for luxury, Mark was known for his casual style and could often be found shirtless and shoeless out in the yard.

Mark approached life the same way he drove his cars – boldly, intentionally, and with a firmly-held belief that rules were mostly just suggestions. He saw the mechanics in everything and trusted his own hands to get it done. He will be remembered for the knowledge and guidance he provided his family on everything from finances to fix-it projects. He was a go-getter who brought that spirit to everything, whether fixing lawn mowers or making Margot her morning coffee. He always seemed to see the problem and know how to solve it.

Mark will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his kindness, humour, and love for his family. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with details to follow. All who knew and loved Mark will be welcome.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour Mark’s memory can donate to the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation, with thanks for the incredible care their team provided.
