Obituary of Spiro Kachulis
It is with profound sadness that the family of Spiro Kachulis announces his passing on March 27, 2025, in Mississauga, Ontario, at the age of 98. Beloved father to Gina (Alexander) and Peter (Christina) and cherished grandfather to Cassandra (Ianni), Alexandra (Martin) and Zoe. Predeceased by his loving wife of 51 years, Stavroula, his parents, Iraklis and Georgia and his siblings, Christos, Dimitri and Vasiliki.
Spiro was born in Dafni, a rural village close to Sparti, Greece. Spiro, along with his siblings, were raised in poverty and had a hard upbringing that included living through World War II. Spiro then went on to serve five additional years as a soldier during the Greek Civil War, helping to liberate Greece.
Like so many of his countrymen and women, Spiro left Greece in the 1950’s for a better life in Canada, arriving with no money, no support and no knowledge of English.
However he was equipped with determination, stamina and a strong work ethic and slowly adapted to his new country, all the while sending money to his parents and siblings back home. As with many Greeks at the time, Spiro worked in restaurants and later owned his own restaurant. In the restaurant where he first worked, he met and fell in love with a fellow worker, Stavroula, a Greek girl who had come to Canada under the same circumstances for a better future.
Spiro was the hero of his family. He was a quiet and reflective man who always put his family first, driven by a strong sense of obligation for his loved ones. Even though he never wanted to be the centre of attention, he devoted his life to his family and doing the honourable thing. He was also a man of strong faith who was happiest when he was cooking for his family. He never sought praise, but was always willing to share his advice, and provide encouragement and his wisdom to his family and friends.
For his family, his advanced age does not minimize our loss, as age does not define the sorrow and emptiness we feel on his passing.
Kalo Paradiso Dad. Give our love to Mom. We will always love you and remember both of you.
