Our dear brother Balanaser or Appu as we called him, had simple ways and was very accommodating and easy-going, which saw him make friends easily, many of whom became lifelong friends whom he kept in close touch with.
Appu had great determination and drive. He was also not averse to taking risks. -- the following episode comes to mind.
As a narcotics officer in his early 20s, Appu made it a point to promptly lock up his revolver in his room upstairs upon returning home. Once, however, exhausted after a pre-dawn raid (always potentially dangerous and risky), he returned home at 8am and slouched into the living-room couch, calling out to mum for a cup of coffee. Our father, who called the shots at home, kept insisting that he lock up his revolver first, but Appu calmly replied, "In life, we have to take risks!" This, in some ways, summed up his philosophy in life.
Appu will always have a very special place in our hearts.

Watched the ceremony this morning. Glad to see the Hindu rituals. Like the obituary write-up too. Appu lived a good and proud Life. Wish the family the strength and time to heal the loss. His memories live on. May his soul bless all of us. Regards, Rajoo, Prema and family.

To Paule and family.
That was a beautiful, moving funeral service you organized with such short notice. Like Appu it was simple, sensitive, sincere and laced with erudition.
A special kudos to the cantor priest and the attendees who made it through the blistering cold to pay their respects to Appu.
Thank you for setting up the link so that we could attend remotely.

Bala (Appu) you have been a friend of mine for over 50 years. Over the years you have been a constant in my life from our days drinking coffee in Serabat stalls in Singapore to scaling societal and corporate ramparts on opposite coasts of North America.
You were a man of Gandhian simplicity but also Churchillian tenacity. Your kindness knew no bounds.
I shall miss you and our late-night chats, my friend.
Your life’s work is well reflected in the family you leave behind.

In his own quiet and unassuming ways, his friendship had provided much comfort and support to all of us who are so far away from home studying in Canada.
Rest well, my good friend Balanaser! Peace be with you!
Memories of you sharing with us all the ups and downs will always be remembered.

Bala Balanaser, known affectionately as Appu, to his siblings and kampung friends (hockey) in Singapore, was a very determined person. After his A-levels, he secured a place in the Science faculty of the then University of Singapore (now NUS), as there was no Computer Science in Singapore at that time. My father had retired, and we were financially tight. Nevertheless, Appu went to Brock University in Canada and worked very hard. He scored a Fist Class Honours in Computer Science. The rest is captured by his family in the obituary. May he rest in peace.

Dear Paule,
I was very sad to learn of the passing of your dear husband, Bala. Like to convey my deepest condolences to you and your family.
I was in the same class as Bala in 1968 and we played hockey together from 1968 t0 1970. I remember him as a kind, gentle and hardworking person. Never saw him lost his temper nor complained. After leaving school, we lost touch for decades until we met again in Singapore in 2023. The fact that I remember him well after all these years is testament to the strong and good impression he left on me. Rest in peace, my dear friend Bala.
