For Uncle Nayan and Aunty Fareeda
Our hearts are heavy, yet love remains,
A warmth unspoken, yet it sustains.
Through fleeting meetings, fate designed,
Two souls so gentle, two hearts so kind.
On street corners, in golden light,
Conversations stretched from day to night.
At Walmart aisles, we blocked the way,
Lost in laughter that begged to stay.
Guyana’s rivers, India’s sands,
Carried us both to distant lands.
Yet fate conspired, the world grew small,
The diaspora gathered at fortune’s call.
No ocean vast could keep apart
The kindred ties of soul and heart.
Kathlean and I, hand in hand,
Found in you a love so grand.
Long talks of life, of mind and soul,
Philosophy’s echoes made us whole.
And in Aunty Fareeda’s gentle grace,
A home was found, a sacred space.
Then came the chill, the whispered call,
A shadowed fear, familiar to all.
Yet in your eyes, I found a space,
A solace deep, a resting place.
Suhani Raat in voices low,
A song of hearts that long ago
Had crossed the seas, yet met anew,
As distant shores in moments flew.
No walls you built, no lines you drew,
Hindu, Muslim—all were you.
A knowing smile, a softened tone,
A bridge of love, a world your own.
I see you both in evening light,
Framed in gold against the night.
But dark shall never claim you—no,
For our memories will always be burnished with you,
That no night can o’er shadow.
Nayan is the window to the soul,
And I know you will forever bless us—
First in your presence and now in your omnipresence.
We want to honor the random meetings we had on our even walks when we would meet by chance, and chance made us friends.
