Obituary of Teruo John Katsube
Teruo John Katsube passed away 23 January 2025 at age 88 at the Queensway Carleton Alternate Level of Care unit in Ottawa. Beloved husband of the late Kazuko, dear father of Bill (Ann), Maki (Twyla) and Taka (Colleen). Loving grandfather of Duncan, Elise, Isiah, Faith, Brennan and Taylor. Dear brother of the late Michio (Yuriko) of Tokyo.
Teruo was born in Tokyo, Japan to Toshio (of Osaka) and Lillias (of Johnstone, Scotland) in 1936. He lived for several years in Egypt (Cairo) and Afghanistan (Kabul), where his father was a diplomat, and returned again to Tokyo in 1943 where he completed his schooling. He was a formidable force on his school rugby team and in track and field.
He completed his Bachelor, Masters and PhD in Mining and Metallurgy Engineering at Waseda University in Tokyo, 1967. He emigrated with his family to Canada in 1969 where he worked as a geophysicist at the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa until his retirement in 2008.
One highlight of his early career was analyzing moon rocks from the Apollo 11 and 12 missions. He also worked on many significant projects, including Nuclear Waste Disposal, the Canadian Petroleum Exploration Program and Land Mine Detection. He was proud to have been awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.
