Obituary of Ante Jovanovic
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, husband, dido, brother, and friend, Ante “Tony,” who, in his 89th year, left us peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.
Ante was a great man with a remarkable presence — his giant laugh, sharp memory, and love of storytelling made him someone people were naturally drawn to. For more than 40 years, he proudly owned and operated his own business, earning the respect and loyalty of everyone who worked with him. Yet his greatest legacy was at home, where he was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a cherished dido.
Ante shared 61 years of marriage with his late wife, Gracijela — a partnership built on love, resilience, and devotion. Together, they raised their daughters — Diane (Christian), Brenda (Michael), Michelle (Serge), and Janette (the late Ian Ryan) — teaching them the values of kindness, integrity, a strong work ethic, and the importance of family. He adored his grandchildren, Teja, Kate, and Luka. Their curiosity and the funny ways they interpreted the world always made him laugh, and he loved retelling those moments. Watching them grow brought him comfort, pride, and so much joy.
Ante is now reunited with his parents, Augustin and Matija, and his siblings Smiljana, Davor, Marin, Gordan, and sisters‑in‑law Mary and Tihana. He is survived by his brother Stane, sister Zelka (Sam), and sisters‑in‑law Sanja and Irma, as well as beloved in‑laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends in both Croatia and Canada.
He found joy in the company of family and friends, especially when good food, a drink, a card game and meaningful conversation were involved. A loyal Blue Jays fan, he followed every season with hope and enthusiasm. With his generosity, sharp mind, wisdom, good nature and humour, he had a way of making every visit feel like time well spent.
His daughters will always hold deep pride in the way he cared for their mom during her final years — a time they believe was his finest and most meaningful act of love. Ante met every day with patience, tenderness, and unwavering devotion to the life they shared. Though her loss weighed heavily on him, we find comfort knowing he is now reunited with her.
Our family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and care staff at the Civic Hospital for their compassionate care. In recognition of our father’s memory, we respectfully request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to a charity of your choice or one that reflects his values and spirit.
