Obituary of Pak Choy Wong

Pak Choy (PC) Wong, peacefully passed away at his home in Ottawa on Friday, May 8 2026 supported by loved ones. 

Funeral services will be held at Pinecrest Remembrance as follows: visitation for family and friends at the Cole Funeral Home Chapel on Fri. May 22 from 4 to 5pm and an outdoor graveside service on Saturday, May 23 at starting at 11:20am with a procession from the funeral home main entrance.

Born in Hong Kong in 1935, PC graduated from the school of Architecture at the National Taiwan University and immigrated to Canada as a budding architect in 1966.  Initially employed in the  private sector including Campeau Corp. and CC Parker in Ottawa, PC eventually joined the architectural division of Department of National Defence (DND) as a civilian until his retirement in 1996.  His perspective drawing skills and his ability to create watercolour renderings for project presentations quickly were much appreciated and he gained some life long friendships from his time there. 

As an active member of the Chinese Council for the Arts, PC took part in joint art exhibitions and taught art privately to small groups, both young and old.  PC loved to pass on his knowledge of painting and particularly enjoyed his social interactions with the aspiring artists and patrons alike.


In retirement, PC studied and became a Feng Shui expert. He provided Feng Shui consultations for both interior and exterior spaces and gave advice to both private individuals as well as organizations including  the Pinecrest cemetery (where he will be buried on Saturday).


As a father and grandfather, PC bestowed much love for his daughters and grandchildren, his truly greatest treasures.   Welwyn and Tegan, his two daughters,  were nurtured in music (piano & violin) and art as well as academics throughout their childhood and into adulthood.  Welwyn studied landscape architecture and runs her own landscape design firm in Ottawa. Tegan went on to become a teacher and is the director of an Art & Nature School in New Brunswick.  

All four grandchildren, Leona, Michael, Rosabelle and Arthur have felt their Gon-Gon’s (paternal grandfather) love and attention over the years from their many visits to Ottawa and regular telephone calls, urging them to go out for donuts or purchase a toy of their liking saying “Gon-gon will pay for it!”  It was his way of wanting them to be happy and know that he supported them and loved them so much.  


In 2003, PC met Jia Lu. They were formally married in 2015.  They enjoyed each other’s companionship. Jia will miss his singing, optimism and wonderful stories that he shared of his past. 


She also appreciated his  contributions to Canadian society.  A beautiful story that Jia shared described their last visit to Ottawa’s Tulip festival, when Welwyn hired a ‘tulip taxi’ and the three of them toured around all the vibrant tulip gardens on display.  PC started singing “Oh Canada…” with joyful abandon while everyone around was smiling and enjoying this happiness with him.  

We fondly remember Pak Choy Wong as a loving father, father-in-law, grandfather, husband, brother-in-law, uncle, artist and cherished friend.  He is missed dearly by his wife Jia Lu; daughters, Welwyn & Tegan; grandchildren, Leona, Michael, Rosabelle and Arthur; and extended family, including his son-in-law, Leland; former wife, Patricia Wong; sister-in-law, Doris; niece, Winnie; nephew, Bernard and family;  and  yet we are so grateful for all the memories and times shared together.
