Roland Bonnaventure

Obituary of Roland Bonnaventure

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Roland Philip Bonnaventure on April 16, 2026, a man whose life was defined by love, resilience, and an unwavering devotion to his family. Roland’s story began in extraordinary circumstances—born on May 10, 1945, in Austria, just two days after the end of the Second World War, to Jean-Paul Bonnaventure, a captured French soldier, and Jean (née Dus), a Polish forced labourer. From the beginning, Roland’s life carried the quiet strength of survival and the promise of new beginnings.

After his parents rebuilt their lives in France, the family immigrated to Canada in 1952, settling first in Prescott and later in Ottawa. Roland grew into the gentle, hardworking, and deeply generous man so many knew. After high school, he attended Algonquin College, and later moved to Montreal, where he continued his education at Loyola of Montreal, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Economics—a foundation that would shape his future career and lifelong commitment to public service.

He devoted his professional life to the Government of Canada, ultimately retiring as Director of Human Resources for the Library of Parliament, where he was admired for his compassion, fairness, and humanity.

But Roland’s true legacy was not his work—it was his heart. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a wonderfully dedicated grandfather. He is survived by his children, Philip (Jennifer) and Nicole (Matthew), who were the pride of his life, and by his four adored grandchildren—Elliana, Isla, Olivia, and Parker—who brought him immense joy. He now reunites with his beloved wife of 46 years, Pauline “Poppy” Bonnaventure, whom he missed every day since her passing.

Roland lived with a spirit of adventure and a deep appreciation for the world around him. He found peace in skiing snowy trails, hiking forest paths, cycling with friends, camping under endless skies, and cheering for his favourite teams. He expressed himself through painting and woodworking, creating pieces filled with patience, skill, and quiet beauty. One of his most cherished experiences was joining his son in the Yukon in 2009 as a field assistant—a journey he treasured and spoke of with great pride.

Roland leaves behind a family who loved him beyond measure and a lifetime of memories that will continue to guide, comfort, and inspire us.

A service will be held at Cole Funeral Services in Pinecrest Cemetery on April 23 at 10 am.

In memory of Roland’s strength and spirit, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
