Obituary of Despo Kanellakos

Despo Kanellakos passed away peacefully on December 13, 2025, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital at the age of 87 years.

Loving mother of Elsia (Lance), and Niki (Gary). Much loved Yiayia of Jesse (Nicole), Shane, Sara (Jesse), George (Brittany), and Nick (Julia). Loving sister of Ioanna (Mike) and pre-deceased by her younger sister Voula (John).

Born in Piraeus, Greece, Despo carried with her a deep love for her homeland, language, and traditions throughout her life. In Piraeus, she met and married her first husband, George Kanellakos. In 1960, Despo emigrated to Ottawa, where together, they built a life and family grounded in Greek values of community.

Family was always held close to Despo’s heart. During the family’s early years in Ottawa, the house was filled with activity, with nieces and nephews frequently visiting to play alongside her daughters, Elsia and Niki. Her home was a true gathering place for extended family.

She had a deep love of music and dancing and was known for her beautiful singing voice. Christmas held a special place in Despo’s heart. For many years, her family home was the gathering place for family Christmas celebrations, where friends and relatives were always welcome. She took great pride in creating elegant holiday displays and centrepieces, transforming her home into a place of beauty and joy.

Despo had a fondness for baking, especially elaborate and beautifully decorated cakes, which were enjoyed and admired by many. Those who knew her will remember her for her great sense of style and panache — she carried herself with grace and elegance. With a strong independent spirit, she took risks, trusted herself, and lived life on her own terms.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. May her memory be eternal.

A private funeral and celebration of life was held on December 17, 2025.
