Mary Lynch

Obituary of Mary Margaret Lynch

Mary Lynch,  a brilliant economist, dedicated international consultant, and fiercely loyal partner, died on December 8, 2025, following a brief and unexpected illness, her husband Gerhard—her closest companion and partner in life—was at her side.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Ceinwen and Joey Lynch, of New York. She is survived by her brother Charlie Chapman and sister-in-law Anita; nephews Kevin (Celeste) and David (Dee), all of Auburn, Maine; and her sister Terri Chapman of New Jersey. She is also survived by her Canadian brother-in-law Klaus (Heather) and step-nephews Josh and Scott.

Mary was deeply valued by her neighbours, who became an extended family, and by close friends who are reeling from her sudden absence. Characteristically direct and unsentimental, when told she might have little time left she remarked, “So I guess my goose is cooked.”

Born in upstate New York, Mary’s early circumstances were modest, but her abilities were unmistakable. She attended the University at Albany on scholarship, then earned a master’s degree in town planning from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. Her professional career began with CMHC in Toronto, where she later led a municipal research organization. In her early thirties, seeking a new direction, she applied to and was accepted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Three years later, she completed a PhD in international trade and economic development.

Mary subsequently moved to Ottawa, joined her future husband, and established her own consultancy. Over the next 35 years, her work took her across the developing world. She lived through coups in Thailand, floods in Jakarta, uprisings in Cairo during the Arab Spring, unrest in Mindanao, regime change in Moscow, and witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. The work was demanding and often uncomfortable—unheated rooms, cold showers, unreliable travel, and long encounters with indifferent border officials—but it was also deeply meaningful. Many enduring friendships were formed along the way.

Outside her work, Mary was an avid reader, rarely without a book close at hand. She loved cooking and hosting friends, walking with Gerhard,  canoeing and camping in Algonquin park in the late fall and returning often to favourite places in the Caribbean. Gardening was tolerated rather than embraced. Although not athletic herself Mary was a great sports fan, especially watching tennis and golf. The Kansas City Chiefs and Ottawa Senators were her favourite teams. Sunday mornings were often spent with a plate of Belgian waffles watching Formula One races with Gerhard. Though she retired during the COVID period, she and Gerhard travelled with friends Kate and Niall to Ireland, and later to Iceland, Alaska, Portugal, Antarctica, and Chilean Patagonia.

The family extends sincere thanks to the friends and neighbours who offered care and kindness in Mary’s final days, and to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Queensway Carleton Hospital for their skill and compassion.

Mary has been cremated, and a private celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to honour her memory may make a donation to Liver Canada. Condolences, notes, or tributes may be sent to Cole Funeral Services.
